As we enter Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we are now being introduced to new heroes such as Black Panther, Antman, Vision and Doctor Strange. With the contracts of the original cast of Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America) all about to expire, this could very well mean a revision of the Avengers squad for a new, stranger team – consisting of a shrinking man, a tribal king, a sorcerer and a cybernetic entity. Our first look into this world will be through the eyes of Scott Lang, to be played by Paul Rudd, who will take on the mantle of Antman from its predecessor and his mentor, Professor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).
After teasing us with an ant-sized teaser last week, now the full trailer is out, so here goes:
In addition to this, the first official poster was revealed for the 2015 film:
With such puns and teases being used in the Antman poster and teaser video, some people now expect the trailer for Black Panther to be a black screen, that of Captain Marvel a long version of the ‘Marvel studios’ logo, and that of Captain America: Civil War a documentary of the American Civil War.
Antman, despite the meek name, is the title used by the wearer of the Antman suit, designed by Prof. Hank Pym, which allows the user to shrink in size while growing in strength. The upcoming movie is set to feature the second Antman, Scott Lang, a robber who is recruited by an aging Pym to pull off a heist that may save the world. As it seems from the trailer, Hank is threatened by Darren Cross and some villainous scheme he intends to pull. It is for this reason, since Hank himself is too old, that he takes in Scott after he gets caught possibly attempting to rob Hank’s company. There is also the parallel love drawn that Hank has for his daughter (who in a shot looks as though she is walking beside and working for Darren Cross, the Yellowjacket) and Scott has for his own little daughter. It is this emotion that Hank invokes in Scott by saying: “It’s not about saving their world, it’s about saving theirs”. This could also mean paving way for the next generation of heroes, as Hank’s daughter goes on to become the Red Queen in the comics, as does Scott’s daughter take on a superhero mantle later on in life. Reports suggest that we can expect lots of badass insects, an awesome prison fight scene, and of course, the Paul Rudd humor that comes with the package. There are also rumors that the original Antman, Hank Pym will have connections to Agent Carter and Captain America from during World War II. Here is an on-set photo of the villain Yellowjacket:
Antman (2015) stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Evangeline Lily as Hope Van Dyne (Pym’s daughter), and Correy Stoll (of House of Cards fame) as the villain Yellowjacket. From the looks of the trailer, it seems like this Marvel villain will also spend some time in a glass or plastic prison.
Antman is a project that had been in the works for around 6 years, with the creative director Edgar Wright at its helm. It was only recently that Marvel fired him for ‘disagreements with the studio’s vision’, as he is known for imparting his own take on his projects. We now await his response to this trailer. Is it even close to his vision for this hero?
