Oscars 2015 Nominations – Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel in the lead

The nominees have been announced just now, and Inarritu’s unique black-comedy Birdman and Wes Anderson’s delicious screwball not-so-black comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel are the lucky ones, gathering nominations across 9 categories each. The Imitation Game stands third with a total of 8 nominations to its name. It seems Jake Gyllenhaal who has already received some awards for his performance in Nightcrawler, for which he has been snubbed here.

Among other things, Meryl Streep gets her annual share of Academy love with another nomination for Into the Woods, as does American Sniper stand as the quintessential war-movie that gets all the votes from the critics; although the latter just might be great. It is indeed a delight to see Wes being recognized and rewarded for his magnificent work – something that is overlooked every year – while Fincher seems to be still under embargo from the Academy, with only one nomination, that for Rosamund Pike. It is equally pleasing to see a Studio Ghibli production, The Tale of Princess Kaguya awarded with a nomination for its mystical yet poignant look at traditions. Damien Chazelle’s (who is only 29 years of age) Whiplash, an indie film about perseverance and jazz music that is an absolute enthralling experience, also gets a substantial number of nods. Without much ado, here are the nominees:
